“Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food” – Hippocrates

Hippocrates was born in 460 before Christ and is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He stated that diseases were rather the product of environmental factors, diet, and living habits. Therefore, I’m gonna take you, my sweet readers, on a learning trip about herbs and their natural benefits.

We’re starting with chive, also know as bieslook in Dutch. Chive is a nutrient-dense food, meaning that while they are low in calories they are high in beneficial nutrients like vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You can either buy it in a shop, but it is also easy to plant in your garden or a pot. It grows back every year in spring.

There are various health benefits of consuming chive. First of all, it is a natural protection against cancer. Secondly, eating chive benefits your sleep and mood. Lastly, it also lowers your cholesterol and blood pressure. Sounds like a good deal, right?

So probably you are thinking now ‘fine, I’ll eat more chives but I don’t know how to incorporate it in my meals? Do not worry, we’re giving you some yummy inspiration right here! Actually you can add this herb to nearly any meal, just use it in your soup, omelet or potato salad.

If you want to go a bit more advanced, I am sharing two recipes which I regularly make at home.

  1. Pork tenderloin with garlic, onions, grey shrimps, cream, pepper and a lot of chive

Rub the pork tenderloin with the garlic before you fry it.

Cut the onions into pieces, and put the fire on a low stand, after 20 to 30 minutes, take the meat out of the pan.

Heat the fire again and use a sauce binder, water and a cube of meat bouillon to make the sauce, at the end you add the cream, shrimps and pepper and at last the cut chive.

  1. Hard boiled eggs

Boil the eggs for 10 minutes in boiling water, afterwards cool them by putting them into cold water.

Peel the eggs, slice them in two and remove the yellow part.

Mix the egg yolk with 1 tablespoon (light) mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon yoghurt, grey shrimps, pepper and the chives. Fill the egg with this mixture.
